What is CASA?
Cleptomaniacs
And Shoplifters Anonymous, LLC (CASA) is a unique, independent and secular
weekly self-help group. It was founded
in Detroit, MI in September 1992 by
a recovering shoplifter who felt such
a group could help himself, others,
and the community as a whole.
CASA's purpose is to provide a safe, confidential
and non-judgmental space for compassion,
understanding and recovery from "addictive-compulsive"
dishonest behavior, primarily shoplifting,
fraud, kleptomania and embezzlement.
CASA's goal is to educate individuals in the group
and the community at large about the
complex motivations and recovery treatment
process for these behaviors, while
emphasizing personal responsibility
and accountability. We have helped
many and want to do more!
CASA is a self-run, self-help group made up
of a diverse group of persons with
a mix of voluntary and court-ordered
attendees.
What
are CASA meetings like?
While every meeting
is unique, the basic structure allows
for each person to express his or
her feelings, circumstances and own
insights about the behavior and how
to stop it. We learn from hearing
ourselves, as well as listening to
others. Laughter and tears, questions
and comments, and engaging dialogue
are all common.
